I was so sorry to hear of David’s passing. Far too soon. I first met David as a freshman at Trinity in 1977 when he was in the second year and Captain of the Boat Club. David was a very accomplished oarsman who stroked the College 1st VIII, and represented Oxford in the Lightweight VIII and subsequently Isis. He taught me to row, and I succeeded him as Captain of Boats and subsequently rowed in the Lightweights myself, a testament to his coaching skills. He was great fun to train and row with, and a dry witty comment was never far away! I have valued David’s friendship hugely over the years. He was Godfather to my son, but our careers took us to different regions of the country and, although we have kept in contact, our meetings since Oxford were far too few. I think we had both hoped that retirement might give new opportunities to meet. It was not to be. I will always treasure David’s friendship, and I send my sincere condolences to his children and family.
