Dedicated to the memory of David Sears QC

It is with great sadness that we announce that David Sears QC, Deputy Head of Chambers and our dear friend, died suddenly on Sunday 24th January.

His untimely death represents an enormous loss to Chambers.

David was a very talented and popular barrister who generously devoted a lot of time and effort to the administration and well-being of Chambers.

He was an excellent and conscientious Deputy Head who cared deeply about Chambers, its members and staff.

We shall greatly miss his good humour, friendship and support.

Thoughts

As in house counsel for a dot com I instructed David in the Fortman v Modem appeal matter. I bumped into him on the seafront in Southwold some years later. The appeal was an important part of an epic saga in my professional life. I was relaying that story to a former colleague then googled David only to find he had passed away. I remember him as a very charming and capable man and am saddened by this news. I send my condolences to his family and friends.

A lovely man - I enjoyed his company, which was of a different sort from that everyone else has written about…. simply because I was his tutor at Trinity and so was responsible for starting him off on his career. It was a pleasure to teach him. I didn’t see him for years but watched him from afar with some pride. Alan Milner

David was proof that, in the art of advocacy, charm and good sense succeed more than aggression or decibels. As well as being a delightful guy, he was a highly effective advocate, whose performance came over as effortless and elegant but resulted from many hours of hard work in mastering the documents and the issues. How he managed to put in all those hours, while pursuing so many other interests, was miraculous. And it was impossible to meet him without sharing a laugh, and coming away with a funny tale to brighten the day. Everyone who knew him will miss him hugely. Jeremy N.
